Will I be able to get hospice care for her if she got Medicaid for nursing home? I want to take care of my mother before she dies. She has Alzheimer's. She is in a nursing home in Maine but I am in Massachusetts. If I bring her to my home, would I be able to get Medicaid for her to get hospice care when the time comes?

Lovingmom, am I correct to assume that your Mom isn't on Hospice care at this point in time? What are your Mom's abilities? Do you feel she is capable of riding in a car from Maine to Mass without any issues? You might want to bring along a relative or friend to help you with Mom in case the ride becomes difficult. You don't want Mom yanking on the steering wheel while you are driving.

If there is a medical emergency while on your trip back to Mass, I believe Medicare would cover its share. But if the emergency was outside of Maine, then a percentage would be out of pocket as you wouldn't have Medicaid as secondary insurance.

Before you bring Mom to your home, contact your own State's Medicaid office to see what steps the Commonwealth will require before your Mom can be on Mass Medicaid. Some State might want a residency requirement of so many months.

Gosh, there are so many things you need to think about.

Lovingmom, if she is on Hospice where she is keep in mind two things:
1. Transport could kill her.
2. Maine Medicaid ends at the state line. Hospice services end at the county line where she is. So all expenses are yours, including the transportation to your home. Please reconsider your plan.

Hospice is usually covered by Medicare not Medicaid. Keep in mind 2 things:

Hospice can be at home or in a facilty.

Whether at home or facility hospice does not provide 24/7 care. Whatever her care costs are now won't change very much.

And, taking a dying person into the home is a huge undertaking. Make sure you understand what lies ahead before doing this.

Call and ask Medicaid. There is a way but each state is different.
