My father was a vet died May 1980. I would like to know if she is entitled to benefits He had a honorable discharge. His name is Daniel Edward C. Sr. born Feb 8 1923.
You do not mention how long they were married and if she remarried. However, a death benefit may be paid of about $250 and if he paid into SBP (Survivor's Benefit Program), she should have already been receiving monthly payments if he paid into that program when he first entered the service. My husband is already paid up, and I will be getting a monthly payment of 55% of his retirement pay. Twenty-five years not to be receiving benefits is way too long. Something is not right about this.
Telly, DO NOT PAY anyone to provide you with information, including an attorney. You can get help for free through VA affiliated agencies and service organizations.
Your profile doesn't provide a location, so you'll have to Google your city, county or state to find veterans agencies (not companies - if the URL has a .com, forget it - go for the agencies that help for free). These are staffed by people knowledgeable on getting benefits for veterans and spouses.
Or, contact the closest VFW or American Legion and ask them which offices close to you provide the same assistance. They both have qualified people who are knowledgeable and will help with the application process, FOR FREE.
Go to American Legion post nice place to join also. They have someone appointed at post who can get you in touch with VA Rep local appropiate person. You will need copy marriage death cert. His ss# which if you are collecting soc sec widow will be your benefit number with a w on the end, same number if your medicare comes from him. Your I D and If you have these they will help you get required DD214 (seperation from service papers) most reps are doing service upgrades so ask if this was done many were not reviewed for service upgrades. Also if you have above info for obtaining DD214 you can go online and request yourself then take all to the VA rep they tell you to. Local Am Legion will know where and whom will give you best attention on your matters. If another militiary affiliate service club closer they can guide you also like Eagles is Airforce, VFW etc. Am Legion has been advocates also Am Vet (American Veterans) advocacy for veteran families, widows, veterans. They help with domestic needs. Even if no service connected. Great volunteer organization. Originally were just American Veterans helping one another and families and Avocation for POW.. My husband was one of origional American Veterans for POW return Advocate Protest chapter in OH. Before they were social volunteer organization. They help with emerg housing and personal needs etc... Even if you not eligible for benefits they will help with domestic as veteran,wife/family, widow.
Depending on her incime she may qualify for aid and attendance. I found my local VA center and talked to them. They are extremely helpful and will even help you file
My mother in law recieves a widow pension since she never remarried. Her husband passed more than 20 years ago too. They were able to help her get the max social security benefits since he was in the army, and she never remarried.
When I checked into this for my mother recently, as she had already received the death benefit when my dad deceased in 1967, there was no further benefit because my dad didn't serve and die in wartime action.
