My husband has taken statin drugs for a long time. I think the drugs have messed up his brain. He was a little crazy before the heart attack, now is getting worse. I still blame it on the statins. For instance, he thinks if you live at high elevation you need more air conditioning than at sea level. in reality, at high elevation, like 9200 feet there is no need for ac. But he insists there is because "heat rises." I could go on and on where his thinking is messed up. So anybody else have had bad experiences with statin drugs?

I wonder if it is the drugs or if the vascular problems that the drugs are used for cause the dementia symptoms. I would love to hear more from people about the link between statins and dementia.

Have his liver enzymes checked. Mom's went too high, and the MD stopped her statins. Her memory improved slightly. She is 86.
Bear in mind that heart attack patients can also have clogged arteries in the brain. See a neurologist with experience in vascular dementia.

My husband took statins for many years. He probably would not have gotten dementia without taking them, because he probably would not have lived long enough. I'm serious.

Every one taking statins is doing so for a reason. I'm with you, Jessie, in wondering if it is the statins or the reason a person is taking statins that is really behind any statistical differences that may show up between statin-users and non-users. Who knows?

My mother has never taken a statin in her life, and in fact has taken vry few drugs of any kind. She has dementia.

I've taken statins. I thought for a while they caused muscle cramps but the cramps continued even when I went off the drug for a while. So far I don't have dementia.

There were two scientific studies in 2013 that suggest a lower incidence of AD in persons who were taking statin drugs.

I am in favor of further research on all aspects of dementia, including any impact that various classes of drugs may have.

don't know that statins cause dementia, but benzodiazaphines do. Drugs such as xanax and the like.

The biggest problems for elders is "polypharmacy" especially if the patient has more than one doctor writing prescriptions. Don't ask for more pills, ask for less. At every visit ask if every Rx is necessary. You'll be glad you did.

amen pst -there is some evidence, I believe, that polypharmacy is implicated. Take as few meds as possible.
