Good morning....i am currently a patient at Riverside Hospital in Newport news va. I have Chrons Disease and is currently in the hospital due to complications of the disease. Upon my arrival I was admitted to the cardiac floor. Later on the sent me to another room which was less appealing and frankly very worse than the one I was in. I complained because I couldn't figure out why I had to move from such a great space to a terrible space and I feared it was because the lack of insurance but the nurse explained to me that if they moved me here it was because I was not as bad as I was before and that they needed the room for patients that were worst off. Which I understood and accepted. But after the nurse explained it to me I over heard the nurse and aid talking about me and my complaint and he proceeded to tell down the hall we got a trouble maker. After that my stay went down hill. The aides were not attentive to my machines alarms that would beep for hours at a time. To the point where I had to unplug myself and walk to get help from another nurse to turn off my alarms. They unhooked my vitals machines blood pressure and little heart mointor and never came back to get my vitals or help me. At this point I feel I am being bullied and have asked to be discharged. My doctor has said that she would change my room. But the behavior and treatment I received was very unacceptable. And I am deeply hurt and feel very much defeated.
Unfortunately, I fear this is pretty typical care.
You mentioned you were first placed on the cardiac floor, then later moved to probably what is called Observation. Your bed in cardiac care was now needed for a cardiac patient due to the extra equipment that is usually in that section of the hospital. Thus, it is not usual for a non-cardiac patient to be moved elsewhere. It can be like musical chairs.
I do volunteer work at my local hospital, and the specialized rooms were better than the Observation section. I remember being a patient in Observation, and believe me I couldn't wait to get home. I got good care, but it felt like a forgotten part of the hospital :P The rooms in that wing didn't have their own bathrooms. One needed to be unplugged from everything just to get to the bathroom, it wasn't easy if the nurses were busy. Eventually I learned to unplug myself. I know what you mean about those, what I call "bleeping" machines, whenever the solution bag was getting low.
I agree with Isthisrealyreal, ask for the Patient Advocate.
I am sorry that you have been put through this, being in the hospital sucks and we are never at our best, these are supposed to be professionals and should be more understanding and compassionate with all patients.
