We lived with her, taking care of her for over a year...we did everything from cutting the grass to paying the bills to cooking the meals...and she became bed ridden, so even bathing her....So anyway we when out of town after her death to drop kids off at family members house...on are return her son and daughter changed the locks on the house, and won't let use in to it....we planned on leaving after 30 days anyway..but now we have to use our moving money to get housing and food....what are our rights???

You need to be served with eviction papers which in most states is a 30 day notice. Is your address on driver's license? Contact an attorney and threaten to sue, for not only no notification, but expenses and mental anguish. That should get them to let you back in and follow the law.

Carlwarren, how did you become your sister-in-law's caregiver? Did she ask for you to move in with her, or did her grown children ask? Was her husband out of the picture? Did the grown children do any caregiving to help her?

I believe by law, you are allowed to return to the house to gather up your personal possessions within a reasonable time frame. Call the local Sheriff's office non-emergency number and ask what to do. Sometimes the police will come to the house when all parties are there to make sure there isn't any problems.

Assuming the grown children inherited the house, the Will [or if there was no Will] has to go through Probate Court. The Probate Judge has to sign off on the distribution. This usually takes quite a few months to complete. Or would her grown children already be on the Deed to the house? Still it was heartless for them to ban you from the home after all that you did for their Mother.

Or were you away for awhile and the grown children thought you had abandoned the house? Lot of miss communications.

I needed a home plan to get out of prison...i talked to Donna ( sister n law) an she said u can come here i would love the company....so i did....i got a job working as a welder on the river...i got my first check an said befor we go any further, how much do u want a month??? She said dont worry about that now...i said no i want to get this out an in to agreement because I don't want no misunderstandings later...she smiled and said i know how u like to eat so ill do the cooking an buy the food u pay for your personal stuff an do the maintenance around the house,,an take me to the store or whathaveya...so thats what we did....an i learned that her children felt it was an inconvenience to them to pick up her medication from the store or take her to the store or anywhere else for that matter ... her children which are my niece and nephew was so happy for me to move in and take care of their mother cuz they felt they didn't have to do anything anymore not that they did anything then.. so moving forward I proceeded to walk to the store for her medicine or groceries take the bus to work I saved up some money and bought a car well it lasted a few months and it broke down I've called my niece and nephew so did my sister-in-law to try to get a ride to the store or something because it was so hot..... but as usual they wouldn't answer the phone or something came up or whatever. I even took her to her chemotherapy treatments. I ended up losing my job because of it. I couldn't be at two places at one time I figured Her Health and Welfare chemo treatments we're more important then my dead in 9 to 5. The plans were for me to save up money move out and get my own place. But things got worse with Donna she could not be left alone she became bedridden. So my girlfriend moved in with us took care of her when I wasn't there she cannot be left alone.. the kids we're out of school we thought we would take them to their grandparents for visiting and Donna was getting worse... Wii rented a car and was headed out the next day.... my niece and nephew would take turns taking care of their mother while we were gone... that night Donna passes away..... so now we already rented the car paid for everything in advance and did not know what to do.... so we thought Wii go ahead with the drip don't stay as many days as we were and hurry back and deal with the situation at hand.... so we come back they done plan the arrangements fulfilled the arrangements change the locks on mine and my girlfriend's residents and never told us anything... and that has been two days now Wii don't have any money for housing or food so now we're spending are moving money for food and close and we're sleeping in a garage that we rented for storage... and they both have houses of their own and families of Their Own... and Donna house sets unoccupied.... and we don't want the house or want anything else we this one of the time so we could find another place by our children's grandparents house and we would move we knew once she passed we didn't have too much time to find another place.... and I'm a welder by trade and my girlfriend cleans houses on the side for extra money... and I cannot get my welding equipment nor my truck to go to work and my girlfriend would drop me off at work and use my truck to do her cleaning jobs.... so now we're stuck... and if there's anyone out there that I've been reading these posts if you have any advice might happen to know a good lawyer please find it in your heart to help thank you...

In my area, you could go to the small claims court and ask for help with a wrongful eviction. They would help you complete some forms that would initiate a suit against the ones that changed the locks. Sometimes it gets the landlord/property owner to back down immediately; sometimes the suit has to go forward.
