My elderly relative is a veteran and eventually there may come a day when he needs more care than I provide. Are all elderly veterans automatically qualified for VA nursing homes? I assume it will be like any other nursing home and he will have to be on medicaid and they will take his social security and pension? Are VA nursing homes in general considered better or worse than the average nursing home. Would appreciate hearing from anyone who has information. Thank you.
Some VA facilities are great; some are not. Our local VA contracts with local nursing homes and skilled nursing facilities, so not all veterans are on campus. Here's a link about the residential settings - http://www.va.gov/GERIATRICS/guide/longtermcare/Nursing_Home_and_Residential_Services.asp
