Find Care & Housing
"A geriatric care manager, usually a licensed nurse or social worker who specializes in geriatrics, is a sort of "professional relative" who can help you and your family to identify needs and find ways to meet your needs. These specially trained professionals can help find resources to make your daily life easier."

My friend used one when she had to manage care for her aging mother in FL from MN and was very pleased. I'm not sure of the cost. There aren't many that I can find, probably because of needing to be a social worker or medical professional.

Geaton777 Thank you for responding. It was recommended that I get a geatric case manager to help with the situation with my brother in law that is in a facility 4 hours away. Hopefully, they will be able to help. Thanks

My mom had a GCM for awhile, ordered by the court. She was not a medical pro, but attended doctor appointments, visited mom at daycare, we had her for dinner once a month.

She has worked with the elderly for years and very familiar with available care. She was a certified trainer for other GCM's. Social worker or nurse or other medical pro is not a requirement.

I requested the court assign a GCM because of the family dysfunctional mess. I wanted a new set of impartial eyes to observe. I had been accused of, well, you name it! And impartial is not 100% correct and the GCM was there for mom's benefit only, representing my mom in all of the dysfunctional mess. To determine the level of care needed and was the care mom was receiving appropriate. She also made sure I had a few hours of respite each week. I hadn't had any in more than a year and a half!

She was there to lookout for me too, but her legal responsibility was to mom.

Glad, you are correct! A GCM is not required to have ss or medical background. I think that professional assoc. uses those criteria to help keep this new job on a higher level, as a vetting tool of sorts.
