Why won't they give it to him? My husband makes 1000 monthly. We have a fam of 4 me & both kids get Medicaid. Please help me. This is important . I've looked on websites that have said the eligibility is way higher than what he makes a year...12000 . Why do the three of us get it but not dad? He really needs it...

Marriage requires an initial assessment of your separate and joint resources. If the soon-to-be-institutionalized spouse has plenty now, and you as community spouse have plenty now, it sounds like you will have to spend all of his - down to the $2,000.00. If Medicaid criteria puts your resources above a specific amount - it may differ by state - you as spouse must spend down lots and maybe the majority, of your savings. We're still learning much about this too. It appears Medicaid must impoverish the community spouse by putting such a low limit on how many assets the spouse can keep. We were told to be careful of how we spend during the application/qualification process, without any specific pointers. One snf staff did say a big issue with Medicaid is whether or not we gave anything to kids or grandkids as those would likely be deemed "gifts" which translates to "disqualify" so - for a time period Medicaid determines appropriate. Review your insurances too. If you have lots of resources as of now that will have to change before Medicaid would pay for snf care. Maybe you have qualified attorneys in your area who can provide recommendations given your circumstances.

My husband and I are married about 6 years. He is 85 and I am 74. We have separate financial investments. My investments were acquired before our marriage, although he is the beneficiary of mine and he me of his. If and when he becomes incapable of taking care of himself and I cannot take care of him myself, will we be required to get rid of all our individual assets before being eligible for him to enter a nursing home. Or will it just be necessary for him to get rid of his assets. I would hate to have to dispose of the money I acquired throughout my lifetime before my husband would be able to be eligible for Medicaid. That would leave me without any resources of my own. I had to put my mother on Medicaid when she went into a nursing home because we couldn't take care of her. I live in the State of Florida. Thank you for your response.

Now Medicaid may be re-evaluating the entire family unit as well as just your husband. Were you required to sign a stack of documents authorizing access to all personal and financial data that exists for each individual and as a couple? The more releases you had to sign, as individuals and a couple, the longer it takes. The more personal documents submitted, like birth, marriage, social security, insurance, or disability, the longer it takes. If the children are both of your children and the resources are low enough for the rest of you to qualify for Medicaid, it seems he should qualify. If either child is a step child maybe Medicaid investigates any child support orders too.

Google" Medically needy Medicaid" and read what it's all about. And yes, you need to call the Customer Service number.

Yes it gave me and my 2 children it but him "medically needy". I don't understand since we are all under the same household and 1000$ a month is too much income. Does that sound right or should I call customer service and try to get it fixed?
