I know this may sound simple and hopefully it is. I was asking the state and county department of mental health/social services on how to apply for Medicaid for my 84 year old mother in law. I was told by the state that I should fill out the Qualified Medicare Beneficiary application and send to the county social services department. It had something to do with her age being 84 and she is disabled.
I am not sure if I am doing the correct application; I want to apply for Medicaid, but don't want to create any problems for her if this is not the correct path to take for Medicaid application. Thank you.

It depends upon which State you're in. But QMB benefits will help with payments for her Medicare benefits.

Hoping to bump this question up so that someone else will answer.

What State is she in?

toxdoc, that is the right way to start the process. You will need 5 years of financial documents too. You can apply online in MD if you want to.

Thank you for your help, it sounds like I am going in the right direction. I am in Maryland. We were working towards the Community First Choice program where my wife can be her primary caregiver. If I understand correctly, once (hopefully) she is approved, a caseworker comes up with a plan for care with my wife.
When the time comes, I suppose Medicaid can help with assisted living, although I realize there are not that many spaces in assisted living facilities under Medicaid.
