My sister spent 10 days in a nursing home. She went there Apr. 20 and
expired on Apr 30. The nursing home is requesting her SS check for
the whole month of April, except 30.00. Since she was there only ten days, can they request payment for an entire month?

Find Care & Housing
Call the Social Security office if you have questions about your Mom. Use her SS number when placing call. Understand you will likely be more than an hour on hold, so be patient, and have a book nearby while you wait.

If went to rehab, no, Medicare pays 100% up to 20 days.

But if she was placed there, then they may be able to ask for the full amount. Was she on Medicaid?

If she was placed in April why was her check received in April not used then. Because, she should not receive a check in May because that is for April and she died in April. And if it is received SS will want it back when they finally realize she died in April. She died the 30th so may not be enough time for the funeral home to contact SS concerning her check and have it stopped.

If the check received in April was used to pay for something prior to her admittance then the NH is just out the money if that is all she had. Family is not responsible for her debts. If she has no estate, then she has no money.

I would call the SS office and run this by a caseworker. I don't feel that the home is correct in demanding the whole month for 10 days. If she is on Medicaid, I would call her caseworker and run it by them.

Highly doubtful, especially if she came from a hospital stay; Medicare would cover the first 100 days.

Review the admissions agreement and talk to the ombudsman. Or call your local agency that has oversight of SNFs.

Condolences on your loss. I hope the paperwork won't keep you from your grief for too long.

I expect it depends on the terms on which she was admitted, doesn't it; plus is this a Medicaid funding issue?

It must feel a bit heartless to you in the circumstances, I'm so sorry for your loss. In your place I think I'd call the NH accounts people and ask them to explain their calculation.

Will it matter very much if the bill is correct? - anything besides the gall of it worrying you?

Why was she in the nursing home?

That makes a difference to the facts about what is allowed.
