Tonight, I had to finally lock up the kitchen knives. There have been no serious incidents but I've been anxious about it for a while. The way dad casually waves and walks with them around is concerning. He still cooks and does a fine job. It's just he doesn't seem to treat knives with as much respect as I like. He just keeps saying that he's been using knives for decades and knows what he's doing. What did it for me tonight was that the dog was pecking at something on the ground by his feet. So I asked dad to not let the dog eat it. He could have used his foot, his hand, the tv remote or his foot long pill case to get between the dog's mouth and whatever the dog was trying to eat. What did he chose? A steak knife that he was using to cut an apple into slices. I said not to use a knife, it's dangerous. He responded angrily that the knife is so dull that it can't cut anything. My response was if it's so dull, then how can he cut an apple and a steak with it? He just looked at me and shook his head. That knife is sharp with a very pointy tip. I've cut myself with it just taking it out of the dishwasher basket.
It was his response that troubled me most. Instead of acknowledging the danger, he seems to deny it. He still aruges that it was safe. So I've locked up the kitchen knives. Are there elderly safe knives he can use? If not to cook with, at least to slice fruit with. Ideally with a blunt tip since the sharp tip is how many knife injuries occur. It's amazingly hard to find many knives with a blunt tip. Would a kid's knife work?
I originally thought of a apple slicer that you just push down on the apple, but he could still cut himself with it as they are sharp.
