Find Care & Housing
My mother complains she can not sleep her back hurts her so much. We have placed a gel pad on the bed and she did okay for a week or so and now we are back to the same thing. She is not able to get into her regular bed anymore due to the height of the bed and her mobility. She has to sleep elevated due to acid reflux and a swallow disorder. I have been asking the nurses that are working with us from Hospice (she is in the early stages and not fully covered yet by medicare) and the Assisted Living facility she is in. Mother has a history of chronic back pain for many, many years and we are trying to keep her as comfortable as possible in these last months or years. Would appreciate any suggestions from caregivers that have experienced a similar situation. Thank you.

You might try one of the air mattresses they use in the hospital that inflate and deflate according to weight distribution. We put a 4" memory foam pad on top of Mom's regular mattress on the hospital bed and it has made a world of difference for her.
