This is all new for me. I heard that Medicaid can recall all that was paid after the patient dies. I have heard 3 different caps in N.C.

I don't believe Medicaid will pay for assisted living at all - but they will pay for a nursing home. I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong on that.

When it comes to the recall, I believe you're speaking of MERP - the Medicaid Estate Recovery Program. This is definitely true. If your loved one is on Medicaid when they die, the state will attempt to recover the costs they paid for their care while on Medicaid by demanding sale of the home or assets they owned.

There are exemptions for related caregivers who lived in the home a certain amount of time and provided care for the Medicaid recipient, but in some states, that means deferment of recovery only - meaning it will just happen later (when the related caregiver moves out of the home or dies themselves).
