Mom is 81 and in a nursing home since January 2015. Has vascular dementia. Continually asks to go home. our geriatrician advised us to say mom, this is where you need to be for now, that way no one is being blamed, but she still asks. I've had friends say that in similar situations their parents asked every day until they died. I don't want to lie to my mom, but I know that I can't tell her the truth. Any suggestions?

This seems to be a common theme. Please keep coming to this site and read other posts and you will see that you are not alone in this type of situation. You have your mom in a safe place.Even if you did tell her the truth would she remember 5 minutes later?I can't tell you the exact words to say but keep a comforting tone in your voice, try not to take what she says personally,be easy on yourself. It's a "Noble Lie" as you are trying to help her not hurt her by not "telling the truth".

Don't forget those with dementia who ask to "go home" could be referring to their childhood home where they still remember happier times, or they could be asking going home to God.
