I like to take my Mom on a small vacation to the beach. Her dementia is at the beginning stages. She gets confused at night. She always wants to call her family but unfortunately they all have passed away. I just want to know what to say to ease her. During the day she is usually pretty good. So any answers would be appreciated. Thank you.
How does Mom do when you take her out somewhere late in the afternoon, such as shopping or an appointment? What about when you are driving at night and Mom is a passenger? If you haven't taken Mom out at night, try it and see what happens. Tell her we are going for ice cream.
Depending on how Mom does when you are driving at night will give you somewhat of a guide how she would be if on vacation. My concern would be her sleeping in an unfamiliar room... that can be scary for someone with dementia.
Why not try short day trips with Mom where you can both be back home before dark.
If she has memory loss, she probably won't remember that you said try tomorrow, or that you use the same excuse each time.
