Mom decided her little dog was so sick she had to be put down. The dog has been very uncomfortable for a long time, but mom just couldn't let go. Mom is been diagnosed with dementia, has delusions and is paranoid. She is also very uncomfortable with back and stomach problems.
Now that the companion she doted for years is gone, I expect depression. Does anyone else have experience with this? We are somewhat concerned this could put her in a downward spiral.
Maybe I'm over thinking this, but just wondering what others have experienced.
She'll probably grieve for awhile, but that's natural. Getting another dog would be a bad idea, in her condition, but maybe she'd enjoy visiting with someone else's dog?
You didn't mention what her current living situation is, but she might benefit from the distraction of going to a senior center, and having people her age to talk to. Isolation is bad for depressed people.
