Thanks Pam for your answer. Mom has $6000 in a policy for a funeral set aside. I know that won't go far and would just be for basics. Can the funeral home be pre-paid an additional amount...say $2,000 or something without jeopardizing anything? Or can anyone offer a good site to get answers? She has minimal funds left to her name at this time but it would be nice to use the money towards something like this.

May I ask for clarification, please. Based on pamstegma's answer - is this only for North Dakota, or nation-wide? We're just getting to the place to ask the same question. Thanks!

In North Dakota:
Amounts set aside for this purpose (burial) won’t be counted toward Medicaid’s asset limit if they 1) total $6,000 or less, 2) are designated by a Medicaid applicant or client for that person’s burial. Earnings such as interest payments or dividends on life insurance policies, CDs, and other resources set aside for burial are also excluded from the limit. In addition,a burial plot for each family member (eligible or ineligible) will be excluded.
