Fleet,
Is this a behavior change in your Mom?
When did it start?

Abrupt behavior changes could be just about anything.
Has she seen a doctor?
Maybe it could be a UTI (urinary tract infection) which presents differently in the elderly.

How old is she, what medications is she on, and what is her diagnoses so far?

How do you go with questions that can't be answered with yes or no? Try the 'six honest serving men', who, what, where, why and when I've lost the sixth!). It might be an easier start for a conversation. Do you think your mother could be nervous about saying something 'stupid'? Are you making it very easy?

How elderly?
Any other known medical conditions?
Any other symptoms of dementia or mental decline?
Has this been a gradual thing over a long time, or is it a marked change?

FF is right - if this is new and different, you should take it seriously and report it to your mother's doctor.
