If you opt for hospice you will have the benefit of help without having to take him out. Hospice isn't giving up, it's acknowledging there is no cure and optimizing quality of life for the time remaining. Studies show that the majority of those who receive hospice care actually live longer, some people actually improve enough with the extra care that they no longer need hospice.

He may be giving up. Not everyone finds a difficult life of suffering worth living. Giving up is a valid choice, though not one without pain. I would ask about palliative comfort care now. I am not sure what you mean by losing a lot of skin. Do you mean losing weight from not eating or actual skin? If you mean skin then sometimes lotions on extremities is not good enough. Sometimes you need a sort of saran wrap under stockings at night to hold the moisture in the flesh. Could help more if you clarify what you mean. Offer ensure if he likes, coffee flavor, chocolate shake, whatever he likes. May not work but worth a try. So sorry for all you are dealing with.

You might contact a local nursing home and ask to talk to the licensed dietician.  Ask her for suggestions on how you can add protein to the ice cream.  There are a variety of powdered protein drinks that can be added to ice cream or made into a shake.  (My Mom didn't like Ensure either--but she did like the protein shakes that she got every day at 10 AM and 2 PM when she was in the nursing home.)
