My MIL dementia was slowly progressing but recently it has really gotten worse. My husband (her son) and his siblings are speaking of placing her somewhere as this stage of the disease is making it unsafe for anyone to care for her without 24hr supervision. They do not know where to turn to for help or where to begin looking. Financially her only income is SSI that she receives monthly, not too clear on the exact dollar amount and I have been told that Medicare does not pay for these facilities. Anyone with information or advice on this matter is truly appreciated. Just want to point the family in the right direction so that any decision that is made can be done so with the correct information. Thank you
If MIL only has her SS, no other assets, then she may qualify for State Medicaid. Your County Social Services should be able to help you. You will need something from a doctor saying MIL needs 24/7 care. It will be up to you to find a facility that takes Medicaid. You will be responsible to provide Medicaid with all the paperwork they need. In my State, you are allowed 90 days to, get the info needed, spendown any assets, and find a facility. Make sure you follow up with the case worker that he/she has received the info needed.
Be aware that Moms SS and any pension she receives will go towards her care. Then Medicaid picks up their share.
