I am taking my 94 year old dad on a cruise Dec 11, 2019, for 11 days. I can take care of most of his needs except he doesn't want me or my husband assisting him with changing his clothes or his depends. How do I go about finding a person who wants a free cruise in exchange for assisting with these basic needs. He has a balcony room with 2 single beds.

Any suggestions would be helpful.

Thanks everyone, I appreciate the information. This was a special cruise planned just for my dad. He asked me to take him on a cruise and I want to honor his wishes. I usually take him on 3-4 cruises a year, and this is the last one so I wanted it to be special. My brother decided to take off from work to help me out. I have a CNA who gives him a shower daily, so my brother can assist me in that part, and he gets a free cruise out it. Win win for both of us.

Don't think a woman will want to sleep in the same room. Hopefully, someone will have some suggestions.

My mother (92 yo w dementia & doesn’t walk, incontinent & needs stand assist lift) and I went on plenty of cruises & vacations together when she used a cane, then a walker. I used to take along a separate suitcase for her pull-ups, pads . Now she wears diapers & can’t take care of herself. In addition, the mobility issues, there’s the behavioral issues from dementia. We went on enough cruises when she walked, even slowly. Wouldn’t dream of taking her now. It would require rental of wheelchair, lift machine, rolling shower chair, hospital bed. That’s all the equipment (less rolling shower chair) I have at home for her. I would have to also pay aide for her. In addition to the cruise. At most, Id take her on day trip to Bway show...& buy ticket for Aide too. My mother’s aide would never go on working “vacation” cruise. & if there’s an emergency? Forget it!!! Leave him home w live in CNA & you go have good time! Hugs 🤗

How can you enjoy a cruise and care for a 94 yr old man. The expense alone. His incontinence would stop me from even considering it.

God love you. You will be rewarded for this.

The thing about hiring a caregiver through an agency is, it will cost you thousands. You’ll probably be paying $20-$30 an hour, 24/7 and the agency will probably require more than one caregiver. Maybe a male friend would be willing to take the job? You probably can’t hire a female caregiver and put her in the same room as your dad....

worriedinCali, She wants to do an exchange, free cruise for assistance with basic needs. I knew someone that worked for an agency that was hired to assist a client on a vacation. All expenses paid for assistance.

I would hire a male caregiver from a reputable home care agency. I would definitely not use Facebook or other social media sites. Meet with the potential caregiver, and discuss duties, time off and so on.

Heck sign me up!! Only changing his clothes and depends? My friend who takes her husband on cruises has to take several family members along to help with her hubs. getting him to meals and on trips off the ship. Make sure that clothing and depends is all you really need.. you may be underestimating what you really will need once the cruise starts. so you can enjoy it too. And it would not be fair to change the CGs rules once the cruise starts.. I'll be on the pool deck having a frosty mimosa

Having a female CNA sleeping in the same room with your father is a no-go in my book. You may want to call an Agency (and avoid Facebook) and request a male CNA.

You can always post on Facebook, but I’d go through an agency. Make sure you specify that this will be 24/7 Care. Also state that the person will be sleeping in the same room as your dad. I’m not certain if you will find someone who would be willing to do that.

Posting for help on FB is kinda like posting on Craigslist, in my opinion.........she'd get every WHACKO BETTY on earth wanting a free cruise and having NO qualifications, etc. I'd avoid doing that if it were me.
