My wife is 77 and bed ridden due to health problems for over 18 months. Because of back problems as well as her health issues she is not able to get into wheelchair. TO get to Doctors we have to use a non ambulance transport and it is very expense. a 5 mile round trip (1 hour visit) is $325. We need to see specialists that are 50 mile round trip and that makes the cost $600+. I know that MEDICARE will pay for non ambulance transportation but not sure how hard it is to get ok for. ANyone know? I don't think we can get MEDICAID because we still have money in our IRA retirement.
Also research paratransit services in your area.
The local Area Agency on Aging might also be able to provide some referrals.
I would also ask the staff of the specialists you're seeing, or ask if there's a social worker with the hospital with which they're affiliated. They might have some suggestions.
Medical, nonambulance transit in this area can be about $40/hour, expensive, but not as much as you've been paying.
Good luck; I hope you find some resources.
