wife's mother has been living with us past 18mths. is in stage 6 alz and quickly moving into stage 7. she is on Medicaid. a mediciad bed just opened up at local memory care unit. these do not open up very much. am concerned about what options we have if MIL refuses to go to memory care unit. wife has POA but not guardianship. caring for her at home is becoming increasingly demanding affecting wifes health, the marriage, and taking care of ourselves. any insights would be helpful.

thank you, thomas

I agree with Sylvial: start with MIL's case worker. Explain that you can no longer meet her needs in your home. Tell her about the opening in memory care and ask her for other suggestions as well, but be very firm that MIL must leave your home.

Good luck.

Maybe your medicaid case manager will help. My mothers told us that her level of care was too much and she needed to be placed. When she would argue with us we would tell her you were deemed a vunerable adult needing 24/ hour supervison because of the dementia and they make the decisions. That seemed to help with our mother and now she is in a memory center and very happy there.. I'm sorry I don't know about the legality stuff and what the difference is with poa and guardianship. My sister is a nurse so she handled that part. You will get answers on that, this sight is wonderful.. Good luck to you. and your wifes health is important. The stress of caregiving can kill you.
