My mom recently had a bad fall. She is 90 yrs old. I try to watch her all the time...afraid one day if I turn around she will fall..which she did. :0(. Now I am frightened if I turn around she may bump into the edge of furniture in the house. I have researched and there are rubber corner baby guards. Feasible? Anyone have experience with this? (Eldercare...so purposeful...but oh so exhausting...so thankful for this site!!!)

Go to Babies R Us. They have edge and corner guards for babies that might work. The REAL answer is not to let her walk unsupervised, though. The real danger is not that she'll bump into it . . . it's that she'll fall on it. You think you have challenges now . . . wait until she breaks a hip.

Make her regular chair a transport chair and fasten her in loosely from the back. Only way she gets up is if you're in the room. That's what I'd do. Learned it after mom broke her hip when I was ten feet away in the other room.

Have the MD send an occupational therapist to evaluate the home. She may need a walker, too.

Henrietta, I applaud your efforts to keep mom safe. But ever since the day the discharge nurse told me that her own mom broke her hip simply getting up from a chair, with three RNs in the room ( including her daughter), I've let go of the guilt. OTHERWISE to evaluate her living space is a great idea!

Make sure she's using a walker. My 94-year old mom uses hers pretty religiously and when she doesn't, it scares the heck out of me - she's just too wobbly without it. Or at least a 4-point cane for balance support.
