NH recommended acute geriatric psych facility for Mom. How to address with NH? NH has good reputation but concerned about mom going back there.

I am going there today and I know she wants to go back to the NH.. Not sure the psych facility will discharge her or not they may want to wait until Monday.
Usually not much gets done on the weekend, so I hope to talk to the psychiatrist today to get their opinion.

The NH only has a psych nurse that has been prescribing the meds. She has a couple of medical problems, bad knees, bone on bone but unable to operate at age 99 and she uses the nebulizer 3x day for asthma. She has been at psych facility 3 days and they are now monitoring her as they have taken away most of the meds. She will be going back to the NH and when I was there yesterday she was very alert and upset to be at that facility. She knows where she is and is not very happy about being there. The psychiatrist will tell the NH what meds to give to her.

When you say " the facility thinks" , do you mean that your mom is now in the acute facility and they've got her stable on meds, but the doctor's at the psychiatric facility are telling you that the NH had her on " too many" psychiatric meds? I'm going to answer THAT question; if you're asking something different, spell it out and I'll come back.

Your profile says your mom has depression; I'm assuming that are other issues as well (dementia , physical issues) that contribute to her needing nh care. Geriatric psychiatry is very much a " try and see if it works" game, especially when the patient has multiple medical conditions and multiple medications for those conditions. If the NH recommended the acute facility, they were admitting that they were not able to cope with mom's behaviors themselves and asked for help, so good for them.

Is the acute facility recommending that mom go back to nh, or do they think she needs to be admitted to the psych facility for continuing care there? Would the geriatric psychiatrist at the NH be willing to consult with the psych facility before tweaking mom's meds? After all, you're not really talking about " the facility" that did this or that, it's the doctor who is prescribing, correct?

I'm my mom's POA for healthcare; the nh calls me before they change her meds in any way, and I get an explanation of why.
