My mom has an infestation of bed bugs. I called two exterminators for estimates and gave the estimates to my sister as she is moms financial POA. This was 6 months ago and my sister has done nothing. My mother is anemic and I am worried her health will get worse due to her living conditions. What are my rights as moms health POA?

Six months ago and nothing has been done? That exterminating should have been done immediately to keep the bugs from spreading all over the house.

Tomorrow call out the pest control company and have the work done even if it means you pay for it.... then present the bill to your sister for reimbursement. Both you and your sister need to have better communications. I would have been on the horn calling her weekly to get her approval to pay.

You need more than an exterminator after six months. The house has to be stripped down and deep cleaned. If she is a clutter queen, it all has to go. The hardest part is vacuuming every crack and crevice, every mattress and sofa, the ductwork, every drawer and closet and doing it all again weekly until the little devils are gone. Remove all the wall to wall carpet (sorry).

Oy. Does your mom live in a house? If she has a landlord, it's the landlord's problem, but if she's on her own, here are some steps to take.

(I discovered my bedbugs on Christmas eve, these were the short term measures we took).

Get a bedbug proof encasement for her mattress and pillows.

Get a couple of pounds of diatomaceous earth (available at home depot) and dust EVERYTHING with it. ( if she has any respiratory issues, this will make them worse, so be cautious). DE causes them to die by drying out their shells.

Alcohol in spray bottles kills them on contact. Buy several large bottle and some sprayers. Spritz liberally. Do not smoke or light any matches!

Wash all of her clothes, bedding, everything in hot water and dry on high for at least 30 minutes. Anything that can't be washed should be bagged in sealed contractor bags for 18 months.

Pay careful attention to the baseboards, outlets ( open up the covers) closets and crevices.

The POA should be reported to Adult Protective Services for neglecting this.

Babalou, one of our very wise regular posters, had this problem last year. I'm P'Ming her to ask if she can post and share with you the methods she took to eradicate them in conjunction with a pest control company.
