My mom can't and they say she gets too much for any help. Where to look? We need 24 hour care, my mom does not have the money to cover that at the cheapest rate. We cover weekends but we all work,,, they say she gets to much money to get any help. We did get VA help but have not found out the amount yet. They said the most would be 1,100 per month which does not go far. Does anyone know where else we can get assistance. We can provide room and board but some of the people that apply are more worried about a place to stay than taking care of our mom. I am hoping we can get some good suggestion for our mom. Thanks for any help

Find Care & Housing
Between VA, SS and renting our her home you should have enough for Assisted Living. If she needs full Nursing Home care and you can private pay for two years, then switch to Medicaid, you can get her into a very nice facility.

Realsitically mom is not going to get better and her level of caregiving and needs will be such that she is best in a facility at some point in the near future. Whether it is AL or NH will depend on what her needs are. The VA benefit will continue to pay if she goes to AL, it will NOT continue to pay at the same rate if she goes into a NH (get reduced to $ 90 unless she is in a state VA NH).

With VA & in an AL, there still will be a gap in monthly charge and you basically spend-down her assets during her AL period of time. Then hopefully she is impoverished to the point to qualify for Medicaid at the same time she medically qualifies for NH skilled nursing care. (You need to work with her MD in this too) She will have to spend-down and be able to show a pattern of spending before Medicaid will pay. NH run from 5K - 15K a month and about 60 - 70% of NH residents are on Medicaid. It is just flat horrendously expensive. Unless you are generationally wealthy, if you live long enough you will run out of money and need to apply to Medicaid for your NH stay. It is the reality of aging in America. By doing a spend-down at a facilty for 1 - 2 years, you enable her to get into a better NH by & large. Those there on private pay make up the list for the limited # of Medicaid beds. Good luck.

I recently discovered "residential care homes". They consist of a regular home, approximately six residents & 1-2 caregivers around the clock. These offer more personalized care and are reasonably priced. They often have aging-in-place and the fees are all-inclusive. I find this MUCH preferred to the corporate facilities with a la carte services to nickel and dime you to death, torment you with constant add-ons, demands.

I think depending on the location you live in regard to 'residential care homes' those can be expensive too, they know what they have so their going to charge i.e. area I'm in $4000 a month (out of pocket); all of this should be an eye opening to those that didnt save in their lifetime, no wonder financial advisors have hayday getting people to save for their future (retirement), hell we need to be saving for assisted living! If you want to be healthy to live long you better also have ton of money to live like you want at 90!
