Does anyone know who offers these services in the Peoria area? I need help for someone who is independent on SSI but unable to manage finances without becoming a fraud victim.

We went throught this a few years ago and the process is long. You must start with the courts so getting a lawyer is the first step. There is a process of declaring the person incompetent and finding a family member willing to become the Guardian and a second person just in case the first can no longer continue the Guardianship duties. Once the doctors and the courts look at everything which takes about 30 days if you have a good lawyer and you provide all the necessary paperwork, then you must file paperwork with the VA. The VA process can take about a year but it does get done. Remember to speak with a VA benefit person after you finish with the courts. They have offices in your area. They'll have all the paperwork you'll need and can act as a liaison for you.

FYI: If the person has a Guardian and receives Social Security, you'll have to establish a Guardianship (aka minor account) at a bank. The guardian handles all banking transaction and will have to report to the courts for every penny. Trust me, we did this for almost 5 years and it makes the Medicaid process much easier.

Hope this information is helpful.
