My mother (81) has Alzheimer's and end stage renal failure. We began to treat the kidney disease with dialysis (CAPD) but she cut off her catheter tube prior to starting the dialysis. Her doctor does not think she can handle another surgery or that she will probably just do the same thing again in not understanding what the tube is for. We really don't have any idea how long she has, the doctor says anywhere from 2-3 weeks to 2-3 years. She is pretty high functioning, i.e still baths, dresses, feeds herself etc. but the effects of the CKD are starting to show. My father is her caregiver, but just looking at different options and advice on how to keep her more comfortable and have better quality of life. Is it too early to call in hospice for this? Thank you for any advice you can provide.
