It's very dark around her house. She has a vacant lot next door she owns that a man use to get into her house. He was standing in kitchen when we saw him. Also several door handles are broke.

Pay some local company or handyman to install the lights and replace the handles. Shouldn’t be too difficult.

Call the Area Agency on Aging or Council of Gov for the Aging in your area and see if they have any help available.

You can’t realistically expect people without homes plus lots to help you for free.

I would just bid out the work with mom paying for it, as she should like every other homeowner. If there’s no money she should sell and move to a place without maintenance. It’s either that or the kids pay in hopes of preserving inheritance.

If you purchase the lights from Home Depot they have contractors you can hire to install them at reasonable prices.

You can also purchase the lights and then join Nextdoor.com and put in a request for someone in your community to help you. This happens on my local Nextdoor every day. Lots of requests for help by the elderly.

It sounds like an unsafe situation altogether.
Yes, I would have the home put into good repair, and I would have light and camera security system installed both inside and out.
It is time also to assess mom's safety living alone in a generally unsafe place.
Do discuss man who used to attempt entry with police if he returns.

Are you asking because Mom can't afford the lights or new handles? We are a forum of Caregivers sharing our experiences. We can only point you in the right direction. Your County should have an Office of Aging. Contact them to see if there are any programs to help her. Call the Police and see if they know of any programs.

Ring cameras are really good with chimes and sensor lights that come on with movement. I have several which also picked up when hub would leave house sleep walking prior to Memory care. It records activity and I can view on my phone even if traveling. Our local FL police department in conjunction with Neighborhood Watch does have free cameras for those that need them esp if you give them access to see footage if needed.
