As I understand it, Medicaid will use the 5-year look back period to determine if an individual who is applying for Medicaid has given away money, real estate or other assets away prior to application. They are looking to determine if this was done to help the applicant get approved (transfer of assets with intent to hide/defraud). It's so sad to work all your life, pay in to social security, only to find out that in order to quality for the help you need in your later years you have to be below poverty level. Sorry, this is my soapbox😐 If assets were transferred during this period it is possible that loved ones or individuals who received the funds or assets will be expected to return the property.
Hope this helps.
