I would like to know what kind of nursing home or assisted living facility is available for a man that has Medicare and Healthfirst as coverage and he is retired with social security and a small pension. I am disabled myself and can not take care of him due to his Dementia and Alzheimer’s. My children help out but they have their own lives to lead so can some help me? I live in the Bronx, NY.
It is important to know that most who get only SS and a very small pension cannot afford Assisted Living. It is really on every person seeking placement to check the costs in your area. Gather what the monthly assets are. Often a pension puts someone over the limit in qualifying for medicaid. If this gentleman is married then there needs to be a division of assets to protect the wife.
Quite honestly it will take an elder care attorney in your area to let you know your rights and how all this works. If you are simple curious about what is available then sign up with a service such as A Place For Mom or like service that will discuss assets of the gentleman versus costs.
Wishing you luck.
Depending on how advanced his dementia is, he may be assessed for Memory Care. You will need to have this discussion with any facility you consider. Make sure the facility accepts Medicaid (not all do). Medicaid mostly pays for only LTC but in some states will cover AL and MC. There is such a thing called an Elder Waiver Program that may help cover the cost of AL or MC. You should ask a social worker for your county about this and also have your man assessed to see if he qualifies for some free in-home services. Social services for his county can be found online usually under the Dept of Health and Human Services, or you can search it.
Also contact your local area's Agency on Aging (it usually has a .gov web address) for more local resources and information. I wish you success in getting the help you both need.
