Was in Assisted Living for 1 wk and went on hunger strike, sent to a Geriatric Psych Ward for reaction to being placed in Assisted Living (wanting to die) and trying to control by not eating. Started eating as soon as she got there and it was over the weekend so nothing really got done and out by Tuesday am and back w/family. Placed on a 2nd anti-depressant which helps w/sleeping but not sure how far you can get w/someone that has had dementia for atleast 3+ yrs. Any ideas or experiences w/Geriatric Psychologist ?

In general, geriatric psychiatrists evaluate the mental state of patients and the efficacy of medications. Why do you say "not sure how far s/he will get"? The doctor is not going to try to reason with her. S/he will evaluate the depression, the dementia and whatever mental illness is present and judge what medication might ameliorate. Good luck!

Yes, Geriatric Psychiatrist. Should be OK living w/family till/if she goes downhill w/symptons that we can't control. She has been living w/family for 3 yrs but they wanted to try out AL to see if she would adjust. B/C of hunger strike from what she says was a broken heart she was taken out for now.

Do you mean geriatric psychiatrist? She's out of assisted living and back living with family? Is that going to last?
