He will be 65 this year and works full-time. I work full-time and cover our benefits.
Does he have to enroll? I think he read something recently that said he has to notify SS 3 months before his 65th birthday.
We don't need the coverage now. Is it mandatory at age 65 to apply?
I have about 6 more years to go for before I am 65, and I think because of the year I was born have to work till 67.
I am just planning ahead. Thank you!
My Mom ran into that when she didn't sign up at 65 because Dad [who was 4 years younger] had an excellent health care program through his employer. Oops. I know it doesn't make sense as Mom felt she was saying Medicare money by signing up later.
You will need to weigh the pro and cons of this question.
The penality you pay for failing to sign up depends on how long you wait. The longer you go..the higher the price. And it is the monthly premium for the rest of your life...so it can get to be a burden on a fixed retirement income.
Medicare part A is hospitalization only. Part B is all other medical services. Your employer may not be offering the Medicare part B supplemental. There are rules for the coverage that must be followed when Medicare is the part B payer. Look at the part B plans....ask your insurance company what Part B plan they offer. If they have none..then they do not offer that coverage.
