She is 88, almost 89, with moderate stage alzheimers. Since Dec. she has more days than not in which she is sleepy, regardless of how much she sleeps at night. She can hardly keep her eyes open, so is napping or just lying down most of the day. She perks up in the evening. All of her symptoms have worsened since just after Christmas and lately are getting a little more worse. We've had everything checked out and she's really healthy. She only takes a couple blood pressure medicines and started taking ativan .5mg for anxiety about 2 months ago. She usually only sleeps 5-6 hours straight a night but goes back to sleep after getting up to go to the bathroom. Is this sleepiness common with Alzheimers?

Thanks so much for that idea. She did change her blood pressure meds a couple months ago and when I looked it up, it said unusual sleepiness is a side effect. I then remembered her dr. saying it could be cut in half.

Is she taking any new medicines that have a sleepy side-effect?

I know for myself since starting taking meds for high blood pressure, I tend to doze off while watching TV.... hate it when that happens, especially when I am watching a good murder mystery and doze off not knowing the ending.

The onset of this is all very recent and my mom has always been active. It bothers her that she is so sleepy. Maybe this is just another stage that we have to get used to. Thanks.

My mom cat naps around the clock. I have learned just not to obsess over it. Although my mom is bed bound - and does not try to get up. Anything unusual to you is more than likely normal to someone on this site:)
